Extra Credit Grade Item - Natural Aggregation (not weighted)

Instructors can grade an individual item as extra credit. Extra Credit will not affect the category or course total. Those students who do not earn Extra Credit, will not negatively affect their grades. Extra Credit can be applied to Natural and Simple Weighted Mean of Grades. While using Natural Aggregation, Extra Credit can not be within a Category.

Extra Credit in Natural

Extra Credit will not count towards the final grade in Natural aggregation when you place the extra credit items in a Category. Fix: Move items into the main Gradebook area and delete the Category.

From the Grader report:

  1. Click on the Setup tab.

  2. Click on the Edit Pull down menu and click on the Edit Settings link under the Actions Column for the extra credit Assignment.

  3. Check the Extra Credit box in the Parent Category section
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save changes button.

Verify that the Max grade for the category or course total does not include the extra credit grade item's points.

Extra Credit Category (ONLY in Natural, Sum of Grades - Not Weighted)

Modifying a category to be extra credit works just like an extra credit grade item: an extra credit category's total points (which is the Category total Max grade) is not added to the Course total Max grade. Extra credit can be added to a Category when the aggregation is set to Natural.

From the Grader report:

  1. Click on the Setup tab.

  2. Click on the Edit Pull down menu and click on the Edit Settings link under the Actions Column for the extra credit category.

  3. Check the Extra Credit box in the Parent Category
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Save changes button.
