Question bank

The question bank is a feature within Moodle that allows the instructor to store and reuse questions within the course. These questions can be categorized and used accordingly. There is by default a category created for the course as well as categories created for each quiz that is added to the course. These quiz categories can only be accessed from within the quiz itself; they are not available from the course home page.

Accessing the bank


Accessing the course default question bank

By default there is a question bank that exists for the entire course. This bank is accessible from anywhere on the site and can therefore be good to use for questions that you will use in many places.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank.

Accessing a question bank specific to a quiz

Moodle creates a new default category for each quiz that you add. These specific banks can be used to categorize the questions based on the subject/quiz that they relate to.

  1. Click on the Quiz activity.
  2. Within the Quiz administration heading inside of the Administration block, click Question bank.
    Note: The course default Question bank is still accessible from within the quiz's bank, but not vice versa.

Questions


Add a new question

New questions can be added to the question banks and then used later in activities. This allows for the instructor to create the question beforehand and then add the question when the quiz is created.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. Options
    • Select a category that the new question will be placed into by choosing the category's name from the pull-down menu at the top of the page
  3. Click Create a new question...
  4. A pop up window will appear listing the available question types.
  5. Choose the desired question type from the list and click Next. Click here for instructions on adding the different question types.



Edit a question

Instructors can edit the questions that have been previously added to the question bank.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. From within the question bank, click the edit tool next to the question that you wish to edit.

  3. Edit the aspects of the question that are desired. For more information on the parts of each question type, click here.
  4. Click Save changes when done editing all of the options that correspond to the question type.

Preview a question

Instructors can view the questions that exist in the bank in order to ensure that the question functions properly and were created as expected before adding the question to a quiz.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. From within the question bank, click the magnifying glass tool next to the question that you wish to preview. This will bring up a new pop up window.

  3. Answer the question question in the box and press Submit and finish. Press Fill in correct responses in order to have Moodle show the answer that accompanies the question.

  4. Options
    • Start again after submitting an answer in order to refresh the window and begin another preview.
    • How questions behave allows the instructor to change the feedback method within the preview.
      • Adaptive mode: This mode allows for the student to retry the questions within the same quiz attempt for diminished credit. A penalty will be applied for each incorrect response.
      • Adaptive mode (No penalties): This mode is similar to adaptive mode except that in this mode penalties are not applied for incorrect answers.
      • Deferred feedback: This mode saves the feedback for each question until after the attempt has been finalized. When the student reviews their attempt they can see the feedback that the instructor left for them.
      • Deferred feedback with CBM: This mode shows the feedback at the end of the quiz, as well as certainty based markings. CBM is a tool where the students tell how certain they are of their answer and this certainty will affect the score that they receive for answers.
      • Immediate feedback: This mode shows the feedback that the instructor has supplied immediately after the student submits his answer.
      • Immediate feedback with CBM: This mode shows the feedback that the instructor has supplied immediately after the student submits his answer, as well as certainty based markings. CBM is a tool where the students tell how certain they are of their answer and this certainty will affect the score that they receive for answers.
      • Interactive with multiple tries: This mode displays feedback immediately and displays the correct answer for each missed question.
      • Manually graded: This mode requires that the instructor grade the questions themselves.
    • Marked out of sets how many points the question is worth.
    • Question variant will change the question depending on the variable set.
      Note: This option is only available in question types that change based on variable, such as calculated.
    • Whether correct sets whether or not the preview will show if the question was answered correctly.
    • Marks sets how the score is displayed.
    • Decimal places in grades sets how many decimal places are displayed in the grade.
    • Specific feedback sets whether or not the feedback that is specific to the answer is displayed.
    • General feedback sets whether the feedback for the question is displayed.
    • Right answer sets whether the correct answer is displayed.
    • Response history is the record of answers submitted during the preview. This option can either be shown or hidden.
    • Start again with these options will refresh the preview with the new options set when the button is clicked.
  5. Click Close preview.

 


Move a question

The instructor can move the questions between different categories. This allows the instructor to make the questions either more available, or less available to the activities within the course.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. Check the boxes next to the questions that will be moved to a different category.
  3. Choose the category where the questions will be moved to from the pull-down menu underneath the With selected heading.

  4. Click Move to >>.

 


Delete a question

Questions can be removed from the question banks.

Note: Removing active questions from the bank will not remove them from the quizzes where the questions are being used. The instructor must remove the questions from the quiz manually if the instructor wishes to do so.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. Check the boxes next to the questions that will be removed from the question bank.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. A verification message will appear to make certain that the instructor wishes to remove the question(s). Click Continue to delete the question(s) or Cancel if there was an error and the instructor no longer wishes to remove the question(s) from the bank.

 

Categories


Add a new category

Categories allow the instructor to organize the questions that exist within the course. It is possible for the instructor to add new categories for the questions.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. Click Categories under the Question bank heading in the Administration block.

    Options
    • Parent category is what the new category will be stored inside of. If Top is chosen, the new category will not be within any others
  3. Enter the Name of the new category.

    Options
    • Category info is information describing the new category. This is merely details that will help the instructor to know what is stored within each category.
  4. Click Add category.


Edit a category

The instructor may rename, move, or change the description of categories once they are created.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank. Look above for more details on accessing specific question banks.
  2. Click Categories under the Question bank heading in the Administration block.
  3. Click the edit tool next to the name of the category that is going to be edited.

  4. Enter the Name of the new category.

    Options
    • The Parent category is the category that the instructor's category will be stored within.

  5. Click Save changes.

Import/Export


Importing from file

It is possible within the Moodle system to import questions from exterior file types. There are numerous supported file types including AIKEN, XML, GIF, and Close formats.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank.
  2. Click on the Import link.

  3. Click the corresponding radio button in order to choose the File format of the file type that is going to be imported.
    The various options needed for importing are highlighted.
  4. Under the General section, show which category the questions will be imported in to using the Import category pull-down menu.
    Note: If the file type supports it, some of the imported questions will create their own category in PolyLearn once imported. This category data will supercede any choice made in this pull-down menu. If the instructor plans to retreive any category data from the file, they must make certain that the Get category from file option is selected.

    Options
    1. Match grades will determine how the grades will be handled when importing questions. They set whether an error is reported, or if the grade is reounded, if the grade set in the file is not applicable to the PolyLearn system.
    2. Stop on error will cause the import process to terminate if any errors are detected during the import process.
  5. Click the Choose a file button in order to choose the file that will be uploaded and imported.
  6. Navigate the FIle picker according to where the file is located. Click Select/Upload this file once the correct file has been chosen.
  7. Click the Import button.
  8. The next page will show the instructor the valid questions that were detected in the file. Click Continue to finish the import process.
    Note: The import tool will return the instructor to the question bank. Make certain that the questions were imported correctly by finding them in the question bank contents. Also, some of the formatting may have been altered when the questions were imported so make certain to read through or preview each question in order to be certain that it was correctly imported.

 


Exporting to file

It is possible within Moodle to export the question bank contents in order to store the questions offsite, or to use the questions in outside programs.

  1. In the Administration block, click on Question bank.
  2. Click Export under the Question bank heading in the Administration block.

  3. Select which format the instructor wishes to use to export the questions.
  4. Choose the Export category from the pull down menu. This will be the category that is exported..
    Note: The default selection will be whatever question bank was selected prior to exporting.
    The options for exporting are highlighted.
  5. Options

    • Write category to file will include the title of the category in the export. This option is only supported by some of the file formats.
    • Write context to file will include the context of the category in the export. This option is only supported by some of the file formats
  6. Click Export questions to file.
