Why can't I entry grades in the Category Totals?

Grades should not be entered in the Category Totals. Doing so can cause problems with the Gradebook. To help prevent these problems, we modified the Category Totals to display a different background color and removed the entry text boxes. If you would like to enter grades for an activity, you can create a Grade Item within the Category and Items tab.

It maybe that you have the items set as Extra Credit. In the Gradebook, click on the Categories and Items tab. See if the items are checked as Extra Credit. If so, deselect those and Save changes.

It may be that your Activity > Assignment / Quiz / Lesson is set to "No grade". This will prevent you from having a text box in your Gradebook to enter grades. You have two options to fix this.

  1. Edit the Activity and change the Grade value to a number. To edit an activity, click on the edit icon on the right in the course view.

NOTE: It may be that you didn't want to use the Activity tool at all. You can create Grade items for class graded items in the Gradebook via the Add grade item tool.
  2. If you didn't use the PolyLearn system to have students submit a file in an assignment, take an online quiz, or participate in an online lesson...then you most likely wanted to create a grade item. You can delete the Activity from the course area by clicking on the X on the right and then create the grade item within the gradebook.

The Gradebook will look like this if you have created this item with the Add Activity tool within the course.

If the Grade Item was created in the Gradebook using the Add grade item tool, it will look like this in the Gradebook...
