Blog

The Blog module in PolyLearn is an ungraded feature in which anyone in the course can post thoughts, stories, pictures--anything. It is a space to share thoughts and content with others within the course.
NOTE: Blog entries can be viewed by any Cal Poly student, faculty and staff member who has access to PolyLearn.

Getting Started

Adding an entry

Everyone can utilize blogs to share their thoughts with the whole campus. These entries can range from anything from insightful to lighthearted, and may or may not be related to course material. There are two types of entries: general and about the course.

Everyone can view your Blog

The Blog is listed in your Profile. Other Cal Poly Students, Faculty and Staff who access PolyLearn can read your Blog entries. If Blog entries are meant to be private for the class only, then a Forum with the "Standard forum displayed in a blog-like format" option would work better.

  1. In the Navigation block (located on the left side of the screen), click My profile.
  2. Click Blogs, and then Add an entry.
  3. Screen image of add a blog general entry
  4. Type the Entry title (required) in the text box.
  5. Type the content of the entry into the Blog entry body (required) text box.
  6. Options
    • Attachment is for adding files to the entry.
    • Publish to selects if the blog is visible to only you or the entire campus.
    • Tags are used for searching and find blog entries easily.
  7. Click Save changes.
Note: To see all blog entries, repeat steps 1 and 2, except click View all of my entries instead of Add a new entry.

  2. Type how many Blog entries per page are shown.
  3. Click Save changes.

Blog tags

Blog tags are useful when searching through the course site for blogs. Blog tags are at most a few words that provide a brief description of an entry, and link to entries so that they are easier to find.

  1. Click on an existing Blog entry.
  2. At the bottom of the entry, click Edit.
  3. In the Tags section, type in the tags for the entry.
  4. Click Save changes.
  5. Blog tags can be viewed within the Blog tags block.
  6. Screen image of the blog tags block
Note: If the Blog tags block is not available, contact the instructor about enabling it.
Note: The only Blog tags that will be displayed are those that are tags for "entries about this course."

External Blogs

It is possible to link to external blogs from blog websites, such as Blogger or Wordpress. This is done through the use of RSS feeds.

  1. In the Navigation block (located on the left side of the screen), click My profile.
  2. Click Blogs, and then View all of my entries.
  3. Note: Alternatively, if the Blog menu block is enabled, click View all entries for this course.
  4. In the Settings block, click on Blogs, and then Register an external blog.
  5. Type the URL (required) of the feed into the text box.
  6. Options
    • Name is the name/title of the external blog.
    • Description briefly outlines the contents of the external blog.
    • Filter tags are tags that will be migrated from the external blog. Any tags that are associated with the external blog but are not specified here will not show up in the PolyLearn blog.
    • Add these tags adds tags to every entry that is imported from the external blog.
Note: Any of these will default to the external blog's settings if they are left blank.
  7. Click Save changes.

Note: PolyLearn checks new entries for external blogs every 24 hours. So, do not expect an instantaneous sync between the external blog and the PolyLearn site.
